Soon-to-be Connecticut Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz should step down as head of the AFSCME union, Connecticut’s Republican state central committee claims. The panel unanimously voted in support of a resolution claiming a conflict of interest at a Tuesday night meeting, according to a Hartford Courant story.
“Either you’re the speaker or you work for AFSCME,” Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst, is quoted in the story.
Aresimowicz hauls in $95,000 per year as education coordinator for AFSCME, the state’s largest AFL-CIO union.
The reaction over the resolution was predictable. Democrats did not believe it was a conflict. Obviously the GOP state central committee did. If the shoe were on the other foot, methinks the Democrats would be yelling “foul” and the Republicans would claim it would not be a conflict.
Of course pundits would be quick to remind us, Democrats have controlled the state House of Representatives forever and Republican never are union leaders, so the other foot analogy would never apply in Connecticut.
