Connecticut state Sen. Heather Somers, R-18th District, said in a wide-ranging interview on the Talk of Connecticut’s Brad & Dan Show, there is “clearly a pattern of abuse, intimidation, neglect and a disconnect between management and the employees” at the Whiting Forensic Institute.
Sen. Somers, co-chair of the General Assembly’s Public Health Committee, said since her committee held a public hearing into allegations of patient abuse, she has not received training records and complaint files she has asked for nor has she received answers on what training employees must go through.
Since the spring, 10 state nurses and treatment workers have been arrested on cruelty charges and 37 workers have been suspended. A video allegedly shows one patient being abused, but Sen. Somers says there has been more than one victim. She also read a letter from a former nurse at the institution, during the interview.
